Where \( v_0 \) = initial velocity, \( a \) = deceleration (negative acceleration)
Stopping Distance
Initial velocity (v₀): 20 m/s
Deceleration (a): 5 m/s²
Stopping distance (dₛ): 40.0 m
Derivation
Using equation of motion:
\( v^2 = v_0^2 + 2ad \)
Final velocity \( v = 0 \):
\( 0 = v_0^2 + 2ad_s \)
\( d_s = \frac{v_0^2}{2a} \)
